AETI’s Wind Power Converters feature active regenerative front ends that can support power factor control and harmonic reduction methodologies. The converters can be paralleled on a common DC bus for multiple converters, and can also be paralleled on the AC grid tie side via common AC bus or separate windings on the transformer to increase isolation and redundancy.  The converters are especially ideal for direct drive power generators operating in the low Hz ranges, as well as doubly fed induction generators.
The converter mechanically consists of two units, the Power Unit and the Control Unit. The Power Unit contains an inverter bridge which consists of IGBT switches and produces symmetrical, three-phase PWM modulated AC voltage to the grid. The control unit is a high performance microprocessor with keypad and interface. The microprocessor controls the system based on the information it receives through measurements, parameter settings, control I/O and the control keypad. The system and application control block controls the processors which, in turn, calculate the IGBT states.
Gate drivers amplify these signals for driving the IGBT inverter bridge. The control keypad constitutes a link between the user and the converter. The control keypad is used for parameter setting, reading status data and giving control commands. Once the converter is programmed to the turbine application, the software can be locked down so that the converter operates automatically without any need for intervention under nominal conditions.
AETI’s Wind Power Converters can support a wide variety of generator and control topologies and methodologies.  Contact the renewable energy experts at AETI to learn about how we can program the converter to meet your specific wind power converter needs.
