AETI offers a utility grade 1 MW Integrated Solar Inversion Station that inverts up to 1200 Volts of Photovoltaic Power and outputs directly to 15 kV medium voltage collection systems.  The completely integrated NEMA 3R Station avoids the cost of containerized solutions while delivering a self-skidded NEMA 3R solution able to be forklifted from the truck to the pad, pre-integrated and pre-tested, with only wires in & out cabling needed for revenue-ready quick commissioning.  The Station converts solar photovoltaic (PV) power into medium voltage (MV) AC power in three stages via its PV Interconnection System, its Grid Tie Inversion System and its MV Interconnection System.

AETI’s PV Interconnection System includes a 12 circuit 1600 amp DC disconnect switch.  When the disconnect switch is opened, the entire Station isolates itself from both the PV input and the MV output, for complete disconnection and isolation from the grid with no arc flash.  Each pole of the 12 PV circuits are pre-fused to handle 140 amps, and each pole allows for up to two positive and two negative lugged cable landings with plenty of room for front mounted cabling, thereby allowing the use of smaller gauge PV cabling for more rapid installation.  The System comes completely pre-configured with all fuses installed and pre-tested.  In this way, the PV Interconnection System is not only a disconnect switch but also a master combiner box that removes one layer of combiners from a 1 MW PV field.  For further PV field design flexibility, the PV Interconnect System supports lower cost bipolar 600 Volt PV panel or higher power unipolar 1000 Volt PV panel configurations, both up to 1200 volts.  In addition, the PV Interconnect System hosts its own DC ground fault protection system that operates independent of the rest of the Station.

The Grid Tie Inversion System uses dual redundant 500 kW Grid Tie Inverters that utilize UL listed power modules liquid cooled for longer life and full power operation up to 52C ambient without any power output derating.  Liquid cooling keeps the power module semiconductors at a constant temperature, which greatly extends the life of solar inverter power semiconductors.  The System’s liquid cooling is implemented mostly with hard piping to eliminate the costs of hoses and fittings, which improves reliability by eliminating leak points – hoses are used only to connect the liquid cooling system to the inverter power modules.  The cooling liquid used is commonly available de-ionized water, glycol or a mixture of both.  To extend the life of the 85C rated reactive power components, a low air flow and quiet redundant fan and radiator system cools the cabinet components for full 1 MW power operation at 52C ambient.  Thus, the loss of a few cooling fans does not shutdown the inverter, and provides the time for operations & maintenance personnel to replace the fans at night without any revenue loss.  In addition, the Station’s air intake is eight feet above ground to ensure a debris-less air intake, and the air is filtered by washable stainless steel mesh filters for rodent and insect proof air intake.  Since the air intake is a low cfm airflow, the Station operates at full power much more quietly than other inverters, which is becoming increasingly important.  The two 500 kW Grid Tie Inverters can be paralleled for more efficient low light PV power capture using one inverter while turning the other inverter off, or as separate inverters to each cover one-half of the 1 MW PV field to optimize Maximum Power Point Tracking efficiency by spreading more power inversion over less PV panels.  And by capturing PV input power up to 1200 volts, the Grid Tie Inversion System is able to invert 20 % more power at less loss for improved efficiency – that equates 0 2,000 more homes per year power by a 500 MW solar farms.  In addition, the inverters are capable of bipolar or unipolar PV input configurations to optimize PV panel cost versus efficiency tradeoffs.  For further twenty year design life reliability, the construction of the System is implemented with environmentally hardened logic controllers – there are no circuit boards mounted raw on the inside of the enclosure able to be damaged by humidity or shock & vibration.

Finally, AETI’s MV Interconnection System utilizes a pre-fused 15 KV Disconnect Switch as well as an MV contactor, which isolates the entire Integrated Solar Inversion Station off the grid at night to reduce tare loss below <100 watts when the on-board cabinet humidity control and heating system is off.  In addition, a high efficiency 12.47 or 13.8 kV transformer (34.5 kV available at extra cost) is integrated onto the skid along with the three Systems above, resulting in a NEMA 3R Station mounted together on a self-skidding base, all pre-tested for revenue ready installation from the truck to the pad via a forklift.  The entire AETI Integrated Solar Inversion Station is delivered with all necessary protective fuses, surge suppressors and lightning arrestors, as well as all utility approved interconnection protective relays and communications networking equipment, pre-installed and pre-tested.  AETI’s Station brings to the market the highest level of power inversion system integration at the lowest level of build and installation costs not seen by the solar industry ever before, by leveraging our 20 years of construction experience in the Southern USA along with our 64 years experience in LV, MV and HV electrical services – we understand electrical construction projects.

AETI provides a five year warranty for the entire Integrated Solar Inversion Station when commissioned by AETI onsite, which removes the burden of installation and maintenance costs off H&M, other than putting the Station on the pad.  In addition, under an inverter and switchgear equipment and services contract, AETI will test, commission and put our Stations and Switchgear into operations onto the grid under one warranty as well.  Not only does AETI make it easier to install and commission solar electrical equipment, we bring experienced electrical technicians to your site to help you finish the project on time.
